Music Improvisation Program
Jazz Improvisation Foundations
About this program
Most musicians learn scales and then freeze when it is time to actually improvise. There is a gap between knowing the theory and trusting your ears enough to just play something.
This course focuses on that gap. We work through the language of jazz improvisation — motifs, call and response, rhythmic displacement — using real tunes, not exercises invented for textbooks.
Who this is for
You play an instrument at an intermediate level and have some basic music theory. You have tried improvising but feel like you are just running patterns rather than saying something musical.
Piano, guitar, bass, wind instruments — all welcome. Ear training is built into every session, not treated as a separate subject.
How sessions are structured
Each week starts with a short listening analysis of a recorded solo. We pull apart what the musician actually did, then apply one or two of those ideas in a low-pressure group setting.
Playing along with recordings changed how I hear music completely. I stopped thinking in boxes. — Olenka Vasyliv, guitaristA note on progress
Improvisation takes time. Four weeks will give you tools and a clearer sense of direction, not a finished style. Be patient with yourself.
Each stage builds on the previous one. The sequence matters — skip ahead only if you can demonstrate the prior skill comfortably.
- Week 1 — Listening as a skill
Transcribing short phrases by ear. Understanding how soloists build tension and release over chord changes.
- Week 2 — Motif development
Taking a two-bar idea and stretching it across a whole chorus. Avoiding the trap of playing everything you know at once.
- Week 3 — Rhythm first
Why rhythmic placement matters more than note choice. Practicing with a metronome on beats 2 and 4.
- Week 4 — Putting it together
Live group improvisation over standard progressions. Feedback session and individual practice roadmap.
